Visual Place Recognition in Changing Environments with Sequence Representations on the Distance-Space Domain

چکیده

Navigating in a perpetually changing world can provide the basis for numerous challenging autonomous robotic applications. With view to long-term autonomy, visual place recognition (vPR) systems should be able robustly operate under extreme appearance changes their environment. Typically, utilized data representations are heavily influenced by those changes, negatively affecting vPR performance. In this article, we propose sequence-based technique that decouples such from similarity estimation procedure. This is achieved remapping sequential representation into distance-space domain, i.e., domain which solely consider distances between image instances, and subsequently normalize them. way, perturbations related different environmental conditions embedded original vectors avoided, therefore scene efficacy enhanced. We evaluate our framework multiple with results indicating significant performance improvement over other approaches.

Visual place recognition techniques for pose estimation in changing environments

This paper investigates whether visual place recognition techniques can be used to provide pose estimation information for a visual SLAM system operating long-term in an environment where the appearance may change a great deal. It demonstrates that a combination of a conventional SURF feature detector and a condition-invariant feature descriptor such as HOG or conv3 can provide a method of dete...

Visual Place Recognition in Changing Environments with Time-Invariant Image Patch Descriptors

Feature descriptors for images are a mature area of study within computer vision, and as a result, researchers now have access to many attribute-invariant features (e.g. scale, shift, rotation). However, changes to environments caused by changes in time, ie. weather and season, still pose a serious problem for current image matching systems. As the use of detailed 3D maps and visual Simultaneou...

Learning with mobile devices: the changing place and space of distance learners’ study

This paper examines the changing study practices of UK distance learning students as they employ, adapt and integrate the use of new portable digital devices such as tablets, e-books and smartphones into their learning. The paper uses data from 1700 students that have been collected in a series of surveys at The Open University by the E-Pedagogies Project between 2012 and 2016. The data cover s...

Place recognition in dynamic environments

We have developed a technique for place learning and place recognition in dynamic environments. Our technique associates evidence grids with places in the world and uses hill climbing to find the best alignment between current perceptions and learned evidence grids. We present results from five experiments performed using a real mobile robot in a real-world environment. These experiments measur...
